Na zakończenie Merce/ And at the end of Merce

Mercè trzeba zakończyć z hukiem i pompą. Cóż lepszego można wymyślić niż pokaz pirotechniczny? Strzał w dziesiątkę. W tym roku w pokazie trwającym 33 minuty uczestniczyło 140.000 osób (w tym ja, Patricia i Carmen, ale niezależnie od siebie a niestety przypadkowe spotkanie w takim tłumie byłoby ogromnym zbiegiem okoliczności), użyto 2.600 kilogramów materiału wybuchowego.

Bagatela 11.000 skoordynowanych wybuchów fajerwerków w takt zmieniającej się muzyki. Już wiem dlaczego w Barcelonie podczas Sylwestra nie ma pokazu fajerwerków. Wszak festa de patrona de Barcelona (po polsku święto patronki Barcelony już się tak ładnie nie rymuje) jest ważniejsza niż jakiś tam koniec roku. Nie powiem, byłam pod wrażeniem rozmachu ostatniego aktu obchodów La Merce. Szczególnie jak dobrze obeznani z tym pokazem barcelończycy wyjęli przyniesione z domu zimne ognie i równocześnie je zapalili na koniec pokazu. Niestety wybrałam się sama, Nuno z nogą w gipsie obolały zostal w domu, bo przepychanki i ścisk w takim tłumie nie są wskazane. Dobór muzyki idealnie komponował się z wystrzałami sztucznych ogni, podrygiwałam nawet w takt znanych piosenek w nowych aranżacjach, podśpiewując znane mi fragmenty.

Ja tym postem kończę relację z Mercè 2011. I zapraszam w przyszłym roku.

La Marcè must end in pomp and splendour. Loud music, fire, water- in plain words a pyrotechnical show, was decided to be the best way to end the festival of Barcelona. Since 140,000 people attended (including me, Patricia and Carmen, independently of each other and since meeting in such a crowd would be too much of a coincidence, we admired it separately) they must have decided on something that really suited all tastes.

This year the show lasted 33 minutes and 2,600 kg of explosive were used for 11,000 coordinated explosions of fireworks accompanied by music. Now I understand why in Barcelona you don´t have a usual New New Year's Eve fireworks show. After all, festa de patrona de Barcelona (in English the festival of patron of Barcelona doesn´t rhyme) is more important than some end of a year. I must admit that I was quite impressed by the last act of La Mercè celebrations, especially when at the end of the show people who attend the show every year took out sparkles they had brought and lit them. And the music was really nicely chosen, I found myself dancing in the rhythm of hits, some in new arrangments or in Spanish version.

Unfortunately I attended the spectacle all by myself, as Nuno stayed at home as it is not recommended to be squeezed and pushed in a dense crowd while having your led in a cast.

Mniej znaczy więcej/ Less is more

O kilku pozostałościach po Wystawie Światowej w Barcelonie (Miasteczku Hiszpańskim, Poble Espanyol, Magicznej Fontannie, czy Muzeum Sztuki Katalońskiej) już pisałam. Są to miejsca tłumnie odwiedzane przez turystów. O pawilonie barcelońskim słyszało zdecydowanie mniej turystów, a jeszcze mniej decyduje się na jego zwiedzenie. Nuno jednak lubi nowoczesną architekturę, więc już od dłuższego czasu Pawilon Mies van der Rohe był na naszej liście “co jeszcze musimy zobaczyć w Barcelonie”. Padło na niedzielę, która z powodu przełożenia planów trzeba było czymś wypełnić. Dzisiejszy post ma też pokazać, że Barcelona to nie tylko architektura modernistyczna Gaudiego, ale innych architektonicznych perełek.



Pawilon barceloński był zaprojektowany jako budynek wejściowy na niemiecką część Wystawy, po Expo został zdemontowany, by kilkadziesiąt lat później zostać zrekonstruowany. Architekt, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, zaprojektował odważny jak na swoje czasy budynek, w którym brak zamykających konstrukcję ścian, brak zbędnych dekoracji, w sumie oprócz okien, pół otwartych ścian, rzeźby i kilku krzeseł tzw. barcelońskich to w pawilonie nic nie ma . Prostota projektu, w polączeniu z drogimi materiałami wywołuje jednak duże wrażenie i w pełni odzwierciedla maksymy "mniej znaczy więcej", a także "Bóg jest ukryty w szczegółach", które to są mottem dla Miesa. Mam nadzieję, że też docenicie subtelne i nienarzucające się piękno tego dzieła sztuki.



I have already written about some of the buildings that were supposed to be destroyed after the 1929 Barcelona Universal Exposition, as Poble Espanyol, Magic Fountain, and Palau Nacional: that hosts the Museo Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. Turists love to watch the colourful water spectactle, see a Spain in miniature or even enter the museum. Far fewer tourists heard of and decided to visit The Barcelona Pavilion. As Nuno likes modern architecture, for a long time the pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was on top of our list of "places we still need to visit in Barcelona." Finally we had some spare time to go to Pl. Espanya this Sunday (as I already explained we had the whole day to fill with some activities as our original plan got postponed). I want to show you that Barcelona is much more than the modernist architecture of Gaudi (however is the city is dominated by his creations) and there are architectural gems to be discovered.



The Barcelona Pavilion was designed as the entrance to the German section of the Exhibition, torn down after the Expo, only several decades later was reconstructed. The known architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designed modern for its times building, where space seems to flow as there are no closed walls, no unnecessary decoration (originally during the Expo there were no exhibits in the building), in other words the space is empty, bare, if we don’t count few famous Barcelona Chairs and a sculpture. What counts is teh structure. And materials the building is made of. The simplicity of design, with expensive and nobles materials, fully reflects Mies’s mottos "less is more" and "God is hidden in the details. One can just appreciate the subtle beauty of this piece of art.

Kino przy świetle księżyca/ Cinema under the moonlight

Lato w pełni. Wieczory ciepłe, więc idealnie nadają się na filmowe seanse na świeżym powietrzu. O krótkometrażach w Poble Espanhyol już pisałam, tym razem wybraliśmy się z Nuno w inne turystyczne miejsce, które latem zamienia się w kino. Zamek Montjuïc w poniedziałki, środy i piątku do 5 sierpnia zaprasza na godzinny koncert (w zależności od dnia: jazz, samba, bossa nova czy fado), film krótkometrażowy i film. Program do sprawdzenia na stronie Sala Montjuic. W tym roku po raz dziewiąty w letnie wieczory można urządzić sobie piknik przy świetle gwiazd i księżyca (jeśli dopisze nam szczęście), posłuchać muzyki i obejrzeć film. Repertuar zróżnicowany: od klasyków jak Pól żartem, pól serio z Marilyn czy Nosferatu, przez hity ostatnich lat jak Bękarty Wojny czy Autor widmo, poprzez nieznane filmy.



Kino letnie cieszy się dużą popularnością. Wszyscy przychodzą przygotowani: kocyk, prowiant, wino czy piwko. Bardziej wygodniccy wypożyczają za 3 euro leżaczek.
Nam idea wieczornego pikniku po pracy przy jazzie wydawała się trafiona. Polecamy i postaramy się jeszcze skorzystać.




Summer is here, and open air cinema seems a perfect way to spend a warm evening. I already wrote about short movie festival in Poble Espanhyol. This time we went with Nuno to another touristic place that in summer becomes a cinema. Till 5th og August, MontjuïCastle on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays offer session of a concert (depending on the day: jazz, samba, bossa nova or fado), short movie and main movie. You can check the concerts and movies on the page Sala Montjuic. This year is the 9th edition already, and many barcelonians chose to have a picnic under the starlight o/moonlight (if you are lucky) and relax with the music and movie. The movies selection is really varied, from classics like Some Like It Hot with Marilyn or Nosferatu, till blockbusters like Inglorious Basterds or Ghost writer,and includes also some unknown more alternative movies.



Summer cinema is very popular. Everyone comes prepared: blanket, food, wine or beer. Some want to have more comfort, and instead of sitting on the ground, rent a deck-chair for 3 euros.
We found the idea of having a picnic after work with jazz and a movie an ideal way to start the weekend. We really recommend it and probably will go again this year.

Krótkometraże pod chmurką/ Outdoor screenings of short movies

…a dokładniej w miniaturowej Hiszpanii, czyli Poble Espanhol (czy jest lepsze miejsce na pokaz “mini filmów” niż w mini wersji hiszpańskiego miasteczka?). O samym Poble Espanyol pisałam już tutaj, gdyż wybraliśmy się tam wraz z odwiedzającymi nas znajomymi. Mimo, że to dość kiczowate i nastawione na turystów miejsce, to chyba warto je zwiedzić choć raz. Fajną opcją na spędzenie letniego piątkowego lub sobotniego wieczoru jest wakacyjna wersja festiwalu Mecal, czyli Mecal Air. W każdy piątek i sobotę (od 3 czerwca do 17 września), od godziny 20 do północy, za 2,5€ ( z ulotką, którą drukuje się po prostu ze strony festiwalu) albo za 5€ (bez ulotki) można nie tylko obejrzeć 3 serie filmów krótkometrażowych (w każdej serii 2-3 filmy), ale także zwiedzić Poble Espanhol. Cena super atrakcyjna, bo sam wstęp do Hiszpańskiego Miasteczka kosztuje normalnie 9.5€ (6,6 ulgowy dla studentów i emerytów), a że pokaz filmów nie zaczyna się przed 21.30, można łatwo policzyć, że mamy półtorej godziny na zwiedzanie.



W sobotę wraz z Sophie, moją francuską koleżanką z pracy z wydrukowaną ulotką, poszłyśmy zobaczyć krótkometraże na świeżym powietrzu. Jak to z filmami krótkometrażowymi bywa, jedne były lepsze od drugich, ale z pewnością zaciągnę Nuno na Mecal Air. Do tego od 20 do 21 jest promocja piwa za 1€, do tego grill, ale lepiej przyjść ze swoim jedzeniem, jak to zrobili bardziej doświadczeni, bo porcje serwowane w prowizorycznym barku są raczej skąpe. Ciepły wieczór, zimne piwo, filmy, dobre towarzystwo, do tego dla chętnych 20 minutowy relaksacyjny masaż; chyba nie tylko ja uważam, że to idealny scenariusz na spędzenie letniego wieczoru.

... or to be more specific in a Spain in miniature, the Poble Espanhol (I don´t think there is better place to screen “mini movies” is a better place to show a "mini movie" than a mini version of Spanish Village). Here is the link to my post entirely about Poble Espanyol, as we went there with our friends few months ago. For my personal taste the place is too tourist-oriented and bit tacky, but probably is worth visiting it once. Nice idea of spending summer Friday or Saturday evening is a summer version of Mecal festival, Mecal Air. Every Friday and Saturday (starting 3th of June till 17th of September), from 8pm till midnight, for only 2,5€ (with a flyer, that you simply download from the webstite and print it out) or for 5€ (withoy a flyer) you can not only watch 3 series of short movies (there are 2-3 movies in each section), but also visit the Poble Espanyol. The price is really attractive, as normally you would pay 9.5€ (6,6 with student discount) to enter the Spanish Village. And since the screening doesn´t start before 9.30pm, it gives you whole 1,5hr to have a tour around the Poble Espanyol.



On Saturday, I went with Sophie, my French colleague (and with the flyers of course to pay less) to watch some short movies outdoors. As it happens with movies shorts, some were better than others, but it´s definitely not the last time I went to Mecal Air, as I have to go with Nuno. Besides the movies, there is a small bar serving beer (between 8 and 9 pm it only costs 1€) and barbecue, but I recommend to bring your own food, as some experiences ones did, as the portions served by the festival crew are rather scarce. A warm evening, cold beer, movies, good company, and if you want a 20-minute relaxation massage, I think it is not only me who think it is a perfect way of spending a summer evening. Korrida zakupowa/ Shopping corrida

Przypadkiem znaleźliśmy się na Pl. Espanya w dniu otwarcia nowego centrum handlowego. Czekaliśmy na Nuno oglądając pokaz magicznych fontann, a potem musieliśmy wypełnić sobie jakoś czas zanim pojechaliśmy na lotnisko odebrać Magdę.

Istne tłumy waliły wszystkimi dostępnymi wejściami do Arenas de Barcelona, policja musiała kierować ruchem nie tylko samochodów, ale także przechodniów. W środku kolejki nawet do ruchomych schodów, jedne się zepsuły (awaria w dzień inauguracji to chyba źle świadczy o jakości wykonania), więc stworzył się gigantyczny korek. Większość ludzi jednak przyszła nie po to, żeby oddać się konsumpcyjnej żądzy kupowania, ale aby zobaczyć efekt przebudowy dawnej areny korridy zamienionej w centrum handlowe. Kiedyś arena walki byków, wzniesiona w 1900 roku, w stylu mauretańskim, obecnie centrum handlowe z 126 sklepami, restauracjami, 12 salami kinowymi, siłownią/ Spa. Arenas de Barcelona to także niezły punkt widokowy- 300 metrowy pasaż wokół krawędzi dachu pozwalający podziwiać niezwykłą panoramę miasta.
Projekt zaadaptowania areny korridy w galerię handlową ciągnął się latami, miał się skończyć już dawno, ale budowa została wstrzymana na kilka miesięcy na skutek wzajemnych oskarżeń kilku firm zaangażowanych w inwestycję. Widać, że gonił ich termin, bowiem inauguracja nie była do kończ gotowa- siłownia nie gotowa, wstawiono na szybko kilka rowerków i orbitreków, na klatce schodowej można się było potknąć o druty i pozostałości po budowie, w windzie lustra zaklejone kartonem. Na dodatek trafiliśmy na protest grupy antykapitalistów bojkotujących otwarcie centrum.

By pure coincidence we found ourselves at Pl. Espanya the same day the big inauguration of a shopping centre took place. We were waiting for Nuno, watching the magic fountains show, and afterwards we needed to fill the time before picking Magda from the airport. There were so many people, all trying chaotically to make their way to enter Arenas de Barcelona, police had to direct not only car traffic but also pedestrians. Inside, it was so crowded that you could barely move, there were queues to escalators, one of them even broke down o the first day (it has to be a bad sign and bad publicity for the company who installed it) so we witnessed a massive traffic jam created by shoppers. Most of the people, however, didn’t come there to spend money to satisfy their consumerist desires but to see the effect of restoration of the former bullfighting arena transformed into a shopping center. Once a bullring, built in 1900, in the Moorish style, now is a modern shopping mall with 126 shops, restaurants, 12 cinema rooms, gym / spa. Arenas de Barcelona is also a panoramic viewpoint –roof with 300 meter long passage allows you to admire a spectacular view of the city. The project to adapt the bullfights ring into a shopping mall went on for years, it was supposed to be finished a long time ago, but construction was paralyzed for several months because of accusations of several companies involved in investment against each other. You can see that they were behind the schedule and the place even if inaugurated, wasn’t finished- gym was empty, they put only few bicycles and treadmills, the staircase was a dangerous place where you could stumble over some wires or other objects typical of a construction site, in the elevator the mirrors were covered with cartoon (maybe mirrors hadn’t even been installed yet). In addition, there was a group of anti-capitalist protesting against opening of the commercial center.
