Zielony biurowiec/ Green building

After visiting the library, which was an example of rather traditional architecture, we visited a very modern and eco friendly office building Media Tic. We were lucky that out guide was the architect who design this interesting building located in the innovative district called 22@. And the visit was so interesting that we almost forgot it was in Catalan, we were fascinated by the stories the architect Enric Ruiz Geli shared with the crowd of anonymous people. We felt like listening to Ted Mosby (fans of How I met your mother understand what I mean). The visit that was to last 40 minutes ended after 1hr 30 min and we didn’t get bored, quite on the contrary. Surprisingly the lecture on the purpose of modern architecture in modern world, the innovation of solutions to reduce pollution.

It was inspiring, and what we thought was only nicely design building (in July when my Romanian friend Anda visited us, we decided to have a walk in a modern and original district 22@ and already we were impressed with this green building and its façade in the shape of flowers) was more than just a nicely design building. We were explained that the façade has a very practical application that reduces the use of air conditioning and minimize energy consumption. Solar panels and other solutions (to memorize them all was just too much for my memory) were used. The architect tried to answer all the question the visitors had and tried to made them more environment conscious . According to him, the future of the architecture is to build eco-districts, taking advantage of climatic conditions of a determined place and innovate modern technology to serve people.

According to him eco doesn’t have to mean more expensive than a construction of normal building. Enric Ruiz Geli has won many international awards for innovation in the field of environmentally friendly buildings. And still he wants to dedicate time and energy to guide (for free) some people who decided to visit his building.

Balkony/ Balconies

In every city I tried to find small details that makes it different from other places I’ve been to. Strangely, I’ve always lived in cities that starts with B and W (Bydgoszcz, Warsaw, Wroclaw, Bucharest and Barcelona, in alphabetical order. Erasmus time in Lleida unfortunately doesn’t prove this letter theory). Each place has a different atmosphere and those small elements that creates it and which I try to discover little by little.

Dzisiaj będzie o balkonie w Barcelonie.

Today’s post is about a balcony In Barcelona (somehow it rhymed in Polish)

A balcony and terrace are very important elements of a Spanish apartment. The bigger they are, the better for the flat: it value increases and so does its rent. We are currently flat hunting and I’ve realized that I am rejecting the offers that don’t have a balcony.

You can always fit a small table and chairs into even the smallest balcony and enjoy a Saturday breakfast outdoors.

Barceloneta is more than just beach. If you enter deeper inside of this district, you find yourself surrounded by lines of colourful clothes drying in the sun. Multi-colored lines are hanging on microscopic balconies ideally fit in with, or even create, the ambience of the district.

Maksymalne zagospodarowanie przestrzeni wymaga kreatywności. Jak upchnąć butlę gazową, rowerek i inne graty? Dowody poniżej.

Creating maximum space on a small balcony requires a lot of creativity. How to cram a gas bottle, bike and other object into few square feet. You have proof below.

Na balkonie także toczy się życie. Sąsiedzi plotkują, ktoś krzyczy z dołu, inny pali papierosy, pieski obserwują przechodniów.

The balcony may be the center of life. It is where neighbors gossip, some smoke, dogs observe curiously passerby.

Balkon to oczywiście idealne miejsce na kwiaty. Niektórzy jednak przesadzają i zamieniają go w dziką dżunglę.

Balcony, of course, is more than ideal place to put some flowers. However, some exaggerate and their balcony turns into a wild jungle.

Inną kategorią są balkony z różnymi dziwnymi elementami, manekinami, maskotkami. Zastanawiam się czasem, czy mają dekorować balkon? Zadziwiać?

Another subcategory of balconies are those with some strange objects, like mannequins or mascots. I sometimes wonder whether they are suppose to decorate a balcony, surprise or shock passerby?

Balkon to miejsce na przedstawienie swoich poglądów. Wywieszenie flagi katalońskiej, FC Barça, flag papieskich czy antypapieskich. Slogany, symbole, przekonania, sympatie i żądania. Przykłady poniżej.

A balcony can be the place to express your views, by putting a flag of Catalunya, FC Barça, papal flag or those against his visit. Slogans, symbols, beliefs, sympathies or requests. Examples below.

Choć i te w bardziej zaniedbanych dzielnicach mogą zaskoczyć jakimś ciekawym szczegółem architektonicznym. Wystarczy tylko uważnie patrzeć. I patrzeć w górę.

There are also beautiful balconies, richly decorated, you can discover them on Passeig de Gràcia, Gran de Gràcia and in the Eixample district. Sometimes even in more rundown neighborhoods you can get surprised by some interesting architectural detail of a balcony. Just look carefully. And look up.

Uliczne przebieranki na Festa Major de Gracia/ Street dress-up for Festa Major de Gracia

A my razem z nimi.

Barcelona is a city where something is always happening - festivals, concerts, exhibitions. Of course there are also fistas that last the whole night. One of the examples of typical fiestas are fiestas del barrio (barrio means district). Not only every city, bigger or smaller, celebrates a feast of the patron saint of the city (in Barcelona, we have La Merce in September, San Isidoro in May in Madrid, and in October in Pilar Zaragoza), but also every district can have their own fiestas del barrio. In Barcelona the biggest, most famous, most colourful and the loudest are Festas Major de Gracia (celebrated every year in the second half of August, you might want to plan to come to BCN around those dates).

Gracia is one of the most popular districts, maybe not so much for tourists, but definitely for locals, especially among young people and students, as on every street there is at least one bar. It is a district that sleeps during the day, and wakes up at night. Guiris rarely come it here, because there are aren´t any famous monuments, on the other hand it has plenty of oriental food restaurants, cinema verdi where you can watch a movie in the original version and hundreds of bars. Gracia has its unique atmosphere, till the end of the nineteenth century was only a separate small town, then absorbed by the city of Barcelona. Fiesta Mayor has a long tradition: it was first organized in 1817, but only around 1920 took the form that we know today and can enjoy during the whole week.

During Fiesta Mayor de Gracia there are hundreds of different ways of participating in this festival: concerts, street performances, admiring the decorations. It is a carnival in the middle of the summer. All you have to do is to admire the innovation and imagination of people of Gracia, dance in the rhythm of music (you can choose between classical, latin, rock), drink mojitos (or whatever you like) and simply have fun and participate in just participate in having fun late into the night. Streets decorated by nejghbors and families in Gracia make your head spin. Every year the theme is different and since the best decoration wins a prize, the residents are working hard to transform their street and surprise the crowd with the result.

This year, thanks to their great imagination and hours of hard work, we could enter magical world of Peter Pan or the Jungle Book, few steps further and we submerge in a mysterious blue underwater world of Mermaids. Turn to another street, and you find yourself in the space, coop or dumpster. The surprises are waiting on every corner. All decorations are made of plastic bottles, wooden boards, polystyrene, and paper-everything that fertile imagination could think of changing into something totally unpredictable.

I was always fascinated by how different are relations between neighbors in Spain and in my country, how here due to neighborhood initiative, people who have in common the street they live on, can prepare something so creative. In Poland, the only contact you have with your neighbor is a exchanging good mornings in the elevator or talking about weather. In many cases you even wouldn´t recognize your neighbor´s face. Here, on the contrary, a random meeting in the elevator always ends with long conversation. And decorating together their street so you can´t recognize it is just a good way to have some fun with your neighbor. And we did have a lot of fun with them
.
