Bagietka, wino, ser/ Baguette, wine, cheese

W tych 3 słowach, moim zdaniem, zawiera się kulinarna kwintesencja Paryża. Wiem, wiem… Paryż to o wiele więcej. I zaczął marzyć o psie).

A czym was kulinarnie uwiódł Paryż?

If I were to describe Paris with only three words,  well, at least the culinary aspect of the city, I would choose baguette, wine, cheese.  I know that Paris is so much more than just that. The monuments are amazing, Parisians so elegant and chic, Louvre so big,  and let’s not forget about the Eiffel Tower. I know all of that, but today’s post won’t even mention them. What can I say, I am a foodie who travels (or a traveler who loves to eat?).

I’ve been in Paris 3 times already, and with every visit got to discover it differently.  My first visit was quite a long, I spent there more than a month while working as an au pair during the summer before I entered the university. My sister came for a week and we went to all the museums, churches, places that you absolutely must see while in Paris. We ended totally in love with the city, but we both think that while it is an amazing city, we wouldn’t like to live there (I will explain it with more details and examples in some other post). During the second  I mostly discovered the nightlife, as my friend was exchange student there for a year. I couldn’t resists visiting Paris and spent  few autumn days walking through my favorite neighborhoods. And the last time I went to the city of love in July, to attend our friends’ wedding (another international couple).  We arrived a few days before the wedding, as Nuno had never been in Paris, and we were greeted by the heat wave and thousands of tourists. We decided to leave a guidebook in a hotel room and just enjoy the atmosphere of Paris, walking without haste and aim.

You can talk about Paris for hours and you still leave some stories behind. It is hard to chose only few photos when the folder “Paris” has few gigabytes, as one can’t resist taking photos on every corner. Nuno’s parents are asking for a Paris post,  I guess now that I have plenty of free time (it is one of the few benefits of being unemployed), I have no excuse.
When I think about Paris, I picture nice cafés and picnics by the Saine. I remember my first French classes in high school, the food related vocabulary: boulangerie, patisserie, charcuterie, poissonnerie fromagerie, confiserie-even the names of shops are melodic.

There are cafes literally on every street. You can sit for hours over a cup of coffee, observing the passers-by, getting lost in a book, or having a  lively discussion with a friend.

Paris is an expensive city (it is a well known fact, but still, every time I visit, it still surprises me) so many tourists (and Parisians as well) prefer some more economic alternatives over going to a restaurant. You can buy tasty tarts in any of numerous boulangeries, or just get a baguette, cheese and red wine.  And don’t forget about dessert, it is mandatory. Even with such a simple “menu” and drinking your wine straight from the bottle, your picnic can be  romantic, if you have it on the banks of the Seine.

In Paris, you have to be prepared for many unplanned meals, as you get tempted on every step by the tasty goodies laid on display. I couldn’t pass by and not look at all those macaroons, sweet tarts and chocolate cakes, and sometimes my strong will was not so strong. And even if you buy just one cookie, you will get it in a nice box. Parisian really take food to another level.

Zmiany/ Changes

Liczę na Was.

I don’t know where to start ... there has been so many changes in my life lately. I no longer live in Barcelona. On 26th of September I left sunny Catalonia and moved to rainy Ireland. I don’t want to get into details, as you may not be interested, I don’t know if you still want to follow this blog that was supposed to be about discovering Barcelona. I already changed the name to a more suitable one, instead of indicating a city where we live, I chose a vague “somewhere”, the previous experiences thought us that we can’t assume that  Irish Galway will be our home forever. For the past 3 years, I’ve already changed countries 4 times (Poland-Romania-Spain-Ireland), so I can say that I am quite a master in packing, resigning from my work, saying goodbyes to my friends. But you are wrong if you think it gets easier. Every decision is hard, leaving everything behind is hard, not knowing what awaits you is frightening. But it seems that being in a relationship with a foreigner means you have to accept constant changes and uncertainty.

This time, we had taken some time to reach the decision to move to Ireland, after Nuno left Barcelona I stayed for 1,5 month longer. And during this time, I had my doubts, judging by my blog, you can clearly see that I really like Barcelona, and since I had never been to Ireland, I really didn’t know what to expect. Then I was living with no job, and the fact that Galway is quite a small city, didn’t help either. Nor the “friendly” comments saying that I would probably get depressed after few weeks with rain and cold. Luckily I didn’t have too much time to think, the last few weeks  I spent in Spain were very intense,  filled with meetings with friends, some last minute family visits. I had the chance to properly say goodbye to the city where I lived 717 days (one year, 11 months, 16 days) and which I really enjoyed. Well, honestly, Barcelona isn’t that perfect, I will try to explain why in the future posts. You can prepare yourself for quite a lot of posts about my crazy last weeks, I have a plan to post one post Barcelona/Spain related per week. For obvious reason, I expect Ireland be the main subject of future posts, but I still have so many pending posts from other cities, just waiting to be finally written about, next one will be about our trip to Paris, as Nuno parents are impatiently requesting photos.

In the meantime, I’m looking forward for some recommendations. What are the places I really have to see, food I need to taste and festivals participate. I'm counting on you. I also invite you to a new Facebook page, where I will be posting more photos, short posts, travel information (I am not closing the “old” one, I will try to post regularly recommendations, news and photos Barcelona-related).

Fast food w Barcelonie/ Fast food in Barcelona

If you expect a post about burgers or french fries, you should check my posts (click here and here) about how thendy ate gourmet burgers in Barcelona.
This post is about perfect places to grab a bite. Sometimes I just don´t feel like having a 2 course meal and a dessert (well, not true, I always feel like having a dessert).

100 montaditos is a popular chain, and as its name suggest it specializes in montaditos (for those who haven´t read my previous posts, a montadito is food served on a slice of baguette/bread). In this particular place montaditos are mini baguettes that have different ingredients inside rathar than on them. Tha place on pl. Urquinaona (the only one I´ve been to in Barcelona) is packed on Wednesdays and Sundays,  as all the food costs only 1 €. For that price you can´t expect anything  too sophisticated, but with three montaditod, chips, half liter of beer or tinto te verano you have enough and you pay less that 5€ (which is cheaper and healthier than in many popular fast food chains).

Spaniards do know how to prepare nice bocadillos (sandwiches). It is just baguette/bread with some basic ingredients, but somehow they know how to take it to the next level. I would always choose any bocadillo they have on the menu in Guixot or Conesa over a menu del día in an average bar I don´t really know. Carmen (who is a real expert on traditional bars that are frequented by locals) highly recommended a tiny bar Conesa, so I knew it was just a question of time till I went and try their delicious sandwiches. When my mum visited me few weeks ago and we were feeling like a little snack, we decided to try their delicious&famous bocadillos. I really recommend the place and if you are ever suprised by the restaurants´ timetable (often they don´t serve food between 15-19), and you are close to Ayuntamiento/Cathedral, Conesa is just at the corner of pl.Sant Jaume and after 5 minutes you can enjoy a quick meal.

Patri took me to another great sanwich place, bar Guixot, that is believed to serve the best bocadillos of Raval. We totally agree, as we loved their sandwiches (some ingerdients, like dactyls, were bit surprising, but delicious) and nice staff (which can be somehow unusual in Barcelona). The place was full and we had to wait 15 min to get a table, but it is an ideal place for a nice and quick meal (and if you can, try their sweet creps).

Suddenly I feel hungry. Do you?

After you landed at the airport El Prat, you probably get the Aerobus and get off in the center of Barcelona, at the Plaça de Catalunya. It is where for many tourists their big adventure begins. You may feel lost at this huge square, were the city’s main streets meet: elegant Passeig de Gracia,  Rambla de Catalunya lined with trees, touristic Las Ramblas and shopping street, Portal de l'Angel.

You pass the square to get to the metro station, or pull your suitcase cause your hostel is located in Raval or Gótic district. The “Catalonia Square” is a meeting place, orientation point, and one of the city’s most important transport hub. Well, there it is a city center- where many financial institution, hotels, shops, banks are located. However, for me it is where pigeons gather. Pigeons sitting on the trees, children feeding pigeons, children chasing the pigeons, pigeons that suddenly start flapping and fly away.

Apparently every Barcelonian has somewhere slightly faded photograph taken on the Plaça de Catalunya during his early years while feeding pigeons.

Personally, I never liked pigeons, even when I was a little kid. I preferred to collect snails in a bucket,
or catch frogs (it was quite a challenge). For some unknown reason I am afraid of pigeons, they have this vicious look in their eyes, that I prefer to get out of their way. Is it only me?

You can find more photos of pigeons from Plaça Catalunya on facebook (please like the page, follow the blog and comment posts/photos). As you can see, my camera is still dead (it is 3rd time in 1,5 year), and I am obliged to use Iphone while waiting for my new camera to arrive (2 weeks and counting!)

Zapraszam do lektury.

Blogging is quite popular. There are so many blogs on different subject.  Sometimes I feel lost. Why is that I become a follower of one and some other are not my thing? Is it the template? Pictures? A blogger´s writing style? Why sometimes I read a blog from the very first post till last and then keep track of new entries? And then visit some every now and then? Sometimes I discover new interesting blogs thanks to other bloggers who add them to their “favourite”/follow list. Thanks to Ajka (we have very similar taste when it comes to travels and blogs) I discovered Monika´s new blog (started in June this year). I left a comment; she visited my blog, and now only became a new follower but also invited me to write a guest post. To see the result of our cooperation, click on the link. Feel free to read.
