Sarmale, mamaliga, papanasi

Finally we went to eat at a Romanian restaurant. We were trying to go there for weeks, but it seemed as if we were under some spell, cause every time we made plans to go, there always were some problems. This Friday we could enjoy some typical Romanian food and I remembered how much I liked sarmale and that mamaliga wasn’t my favorite. And unfortunately, it turned out that papanasi, a dessert I was looking forward to eat for moths, was not even as half tasty as I remembered from Bucharest restaurants. Some of Nuno’s work colleagues joined us, for one of them it was also a nostalgic dinner ad he spent his Erasmus in Bucharest at the same time when we were there. Talk about a coincidence!

What comes into your mind when you think about Romania? Dracula? Bats? Well, even if it is a unfair generalization and cliché, the interior of Crama Dracula had all of it. A portrait of Vlad Tepes, who inspired the book and movie character of Dracula, bats and small figures of Dracula hanging from the walls. We spend a nice evening drinking ursus in big mugs, eating cascaval pane (fried cheese, which I used to eat at least once a week for lunch) and bread with zakuska.

We ordered enormous plates with different types of typical meat, (still it was nothing comparing to huge plates they serve in Excalibur) and mamaliga. For dessert, I could not order anything but my favorite papanasi. I expected it was the same sized as in Bucharest, so I joked about spending one hour on a treadmill preparing for eating at least two of them. But it turned out they were little and really nothing that special. We still ate a lot, and once again we were left with leftovers to take home. Lucky us, once again we didn’t have to prepare lunch.

For the record, I must express my deep disappointment that there are no restaurants serving Polish food in Barcelona. Maybe I should consider it an idea for my own business? :)
