Weekend listopadowy/ November weekend

A pogodę w Barcelonie przez ostatnie tygodnia najlepiej opisują piosenki : Ciągle pada, Raindrops keep falling on my head, No ha parado de llover, Chuva.

I admit, my blog has been neglected in the last few weeks. But there is a simple explanation: tiredness, laziness and autumn weather. Last weeks have been hectic at work as my colleague moved to another department so my responsibilities doubled. I am so tired that by the time I get home all I can think about is a couch and watching movies and TV series, or to read some magazines that my parents left while drinking my favourite green tea. And when thinking about the weather, the following songs keep playing in my head: Polish classis Ciągle pada, Raindrops keep falling on my head, No ha parado de llover, Chuva.

But there was a really nice weekend, sun and 20 degrees, and it was the weekend when my parents come to visit, as there was a 3days weekend in Poland. They had to spend Friday alone as I was at work, but I was surprised how well they spent it: after a walk on the beach, they went alone to Barcelona’s classic El Xampanyet to have some tapas and sparkling wine. In the evening I waited for them in a Portuguese bar, where we had some green wine and Portuguese snacks. Later on a mojito in a Cuban bar. Basically, all the weekend was about having a nice meal, enjoying food in a nice company.

On Saturday we went to Quimet, because my dad hadn’t had the chance to taste their delicious montaditos and vermouth, and for dinner Nuno prepared, not surprising given his origins, cod. Unfortunately, on Sunday good weather was just a nice memory, as the rain caught us in the middle of our walk on Born, and after lunch in a Brasilian restaurant we spent the rest of the day at home.

Since it was my parents’ 3rd time in Barcelona, we didn’t feel the pressure to do any sightseeing. We just spent a pleasant time eating tapas, Portuguese delicacies and getting my parents familiar with Brazilian cuisine. And they tasted for the first time castañas, vinho verde and pomegranate. It was a really nice weekend.

Pchli targ/ Flea market

You can buy almost everything in Barcelona. The Barcelona shopping map in clearly divided in different sections, depending on what you want and how much you can afford. Passeig de Gracia is a mekka for those who like exclusive, expensive and boutiques such as Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Louboutin, Chanel or Louis Vuitton. Still, us, ordinary people that have slightly thinner wallets, can shop on the same street (next to PL. Catalunya), for us there are shops of the Spanish group Inditex: Zara, Pull&Bear, Bershka, Stradivarius. Barrio Gótico is the paradise for those who like antique shops and traditional shops where one can discover unique items that are to be found nowhere else but in this district.

For those who are into flea markets, who likes this thrill of excitement while thinking of looking through piles and piles of objects to find something extraordinary that makes all the effort totally worth it, the perfect place to spend few hours is Els Encants flea market (open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays). Be warned, this is not the place for everyone.

Els Encants is one of the largest fairs in Europe, opened in XIV century. And you really can buy here EVERYTHING. Antiques, used books, clothes, shoes, batteries, jewelry, buttons, old coins, vinyl records, computer games and board games, watches, sunglasses .... Unfortunately, the most of things is pure rubbish. I wonder where they got some of the objects. But for sure, if you are patient and lucky you can come across some real gems.

The flea market is a maze where you get lost easily. You get overwhelmed, by the noise, by the fuss, by the tackiness and ugliness. You can lose your patience and hope to find some treasure in the sea of junk. Piles of cheap, old, used shoes (some probably don’t even have their pair), old plates and cups covered with dust that looked as if they had spend decades on your deceased aunt’s attic, makes you desperately look for the exit. However, there are some stands that make you slow down, as you spot some familiar objects. Nuno got nostalgic few times when finding a toy exactly the same he had in his childhood or the first Nintendo he had.

Els Encants is the place that makes you travel to the nostalgic times of your past, you can picture yourself playing with a Barbie doll or taking photos with old Zenit , and those memories, that you forgot you had, can really make your day.

Els Encants is a paradise for all type of collectors: you can find several stands selling old coins, stamps, caps. If you want to buy some used books, vinyl records or some old cameras, it is the place.

This flea market is also a place where you can go when you have no idea where to buy a thing you need, as charger for your PC, phone or cam, or batteries for your flashlight, tap washer, buttons and thread in all possible colors, or custom-sized screwdriver.

But before you decide to go to Els Encants, remember a few things: never ever prepare a shopping list, cause you never know what you can come across, just be open to hidden surprises that wait for you, don’t be disappointed if you don’t find any treasures, expect crowds (the market is visited by 100,000 people a week) and beware of pickpockets.
