Zamknięte z powodu wakacji/ Closed because of holidays

Wracając do piosenki… Rabiosa ma szansę zostać tegorocznym hitem lata.

I tym akcentem zakończę i wrócę do pakowania…

You can find “Closed because of holidays “ on the doors of many Spanish shops, bars and other places in August. August is when small family business close and when most of the Spaniards go on holiday, As we don´t like the crowds, we decided to go in the beginning of July. During the next 10 days we plan to relax and enjoy the sun&sea of Sardinia. That is why there will be no new post.

Today's entry is short, light and ideal for summer.

You can find the Shakira´s videoclip shot in Barcelona. You can try to recognize and locate the spots shown. The music is energetic, ideal for beach parties in the summer. The interesting part of making the video is the fact that the Colombian singer had to pay a fine of 400€ for entering to a fountain without a permit and for a riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

The second clip is also Shakira´s and it was also shot in Barcelona, in some disco. Barcelona seems to be one of the singer's favorite cities, which probably has something to do with her relationship with Piqué. Getting back to the song as here is not the place to gossip around… Rabiosa is likely to be summer hit this year.

And with this energetic accent, I go back to packing.

Kwiatowe dywany/ Flower carpets

Today’s post is about yet another tradition of celebrating the Corpus Christi, as it seems that this holiday is important tradition in Catalonia, and results really interesting for me. I discovered everything here, partialy thanks to my collegue Carmen, walking encyclopedia on Spanish unfamiliar and strange celebrations. At the university I had twice a week a lecture on the Culture of Spanish Regions (oh, those videos from the 90’s), I remember a lot of interesting fiestas, but I don’t recall our teacher ever mentioning the dancing egg, or the flower carpets, or the Patum in Berga. The previous post was about the daning egg, about Patum you wil read next year (I promise), cause this year we could only be in one place at a time, and we chose going to admire flower carpets in Sitges.

Flower carpets, as the name itself suggests are carpets made of flowers, that people create on pavements. The celebration of Corpus Christi in Sitges is considered Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, that is Fiesta of National Tourist Interest. I am really interested in learning new things about different cultures, discovering surprising traditions and customs, so I didn’t need much to plan my another trip to Sitges, where since the 60s, the competition of flower carpets takes place every year. Traditionally who created the carpets were the people who lived in the houses on the streets where the procession was passing in the evening (so after all we have some point in common in celebrating the Corpus).

This year's edition was not as impressive as the previous one. This is my subjective oppinion based on archival photos, but was also confirmed by an article in El Pais, where they compared numbers of flowers used this and last year. The result falls in favor of last year's contest, what can explained by the crisis. Cloves, which are used traditionally for "weaving" the carpets, have been partially replaced by other flowers, grains or dried fruits.
This year the competitions of the carpets was cancelled, it was just the exhibition. Maybe that's why they weren’t as impressive as in the past, cause the creator didn’t have to compete for the title of the most beautiful carpet? Carmen, who happened to go to Sitges to see the alfombras at the same time as us was also slightly disappointed. But that doesn’t mean that the residents of Sitges and the surroundings decided to miss the event. On the contrary, there was a multitude that in spite of high temperatures and harsh sun was commenting on the carpets. I tried to take pictures of the carpets without any people in the background but it was almost impossible. And after the exhibition all those people moves to the beach, and us with them.

Tańczące jajko/ Dancing egg

W Polsce mamy procesje na Boże Ciało, a w Barcelonie mamy… tańczące jajko. L'ou com balla to typowo katalońska tradycja obchodzenia Corpus Christi.

Corpus-Christi tradition in Poland are basically limited to processions with little girls in white dresses throwing flower petals. In Barcelona we have something quite peculiar, that is the dancing egg… L'ou com balla is a typical Catalan tradition of celebrating the Feast of Corpus Christi. In other regions there are different ways of celebrating this Catholic holiday, also depending on the region this day is a day off from work, or not (as in Catalonia, where few years ago it was decided that the main celebrations Fests of the Body of Christ are moved to Sunday, so it is no longer a day off, but instead Sant Joan is), all this just confirms how diverse country Spain is. The dancing egg, however, is something really bizarre, something I would never associate with the Corpus, so this is why I already had planned few days ahead that I would spend my Saturday visiting several patios where you can see it. I downloaded the schedule of the Corpus Christi celebrations in Barcelona (as it is celebrated from Thursday until Sunday) from the city hall’s website . Unfortunately, many patios, that are usually not opened for public visitors could be visited only during the special “open hours” on the 23rd of June, when I had to work. Still I enjoyed the egg tradition on Saturday, when I three cloisters: Saint Anne Church, the Cathedral and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

In every cloister, the fountain in the center was decorated with flowers and cherry fruits (cherry symbolizes something, but I wasn’t able to find what exactly in Christian tradition does it represent). Fortunately there weren’t many tourists or Barcelonians, so I could take as many pics as I wanted hoping that at least one make somebody go next year to see it. The only thing that surprised me was the fact that St. Anne Church the main point of the celebration of Corpus Christi, that is the egg, was missing. I don’t know whether it had fallen or it disappeared in some other mysterious way, but the fountain was empty (it is believed to be a good sign if the egg doesn’t fall and is not broken during the whole day). Luckily I could observe and get mesmerized by the show of dancing egg, that is spinning in the air, kept by the force of water. The origins of this unique tradition, one of the oldest and most original In Barcelona are unknown (nothing surprising when it comes to old customs. The dancing egg was first mentioned in the 17th century and according to one version it is believed to be invented as a simple entertainment for the nobility while waiting for the procession to pass. The explanation of the symbolism of the egg seems bit easier: in Christianity the egg is a symbol of new life and rebirth, and it can be interpreted as the Eucharist is rising over chalice.

Personally I think that in this case origins are not that important. Even without knowing for sure where the tradition of the dancing egg comes from, it is a good way to discover some interesting places of Barcelona, and at the same time experience something unique.

Noc świętojańska na plaży/The San Joan fiestas on the beach

700,000 people spent the night of Sant Joan on the beaches of Barcelona, and I was among them. But let´s start from the beginning. In Catalonia, St John's Eve is celebrated with fire, water, music, and sice 24th of June is a day off, you can picture how big the party is. I strongly believe that in any other country there are so many celebrations on different occasions as in Spain. It is the country of fiestas. I promise I will tell you about all the fiestas I participated in, as it is another way to get to know profoundly the country I live in. Getting back to the point, that is how they celebrate San Joan. During the night of 23 to 24 June in Barcelona more fireworks and firecrackers are shot than on the New Year's Eve. Fire is an important part of the celebration of midsummer night, there are bonfires on the beaches and main squares. The fire traditionally symbolizes purity and fertility, in the past neighbors used to burn old furniture and gather around bonfires. Midsummer's Day, or verbena de San Joan, has other names: Noche del Fuego (Night of Fire), Noche de las Brujas (Witches Night). Another symbol of verbena of Sant Joan is water, according to popular belief on this night the water has magical healing effect, as confirmed by the proverb: "Baño de San Juan, salud para todo el ano" (or "Bathe on San Juan, health for the entire year") . That is why it become tradition to take a first swim in the sea that night. The shortest night of the year is also the only day when you can do basically everything on the beach, everything is allowed: drinking, barbecuing, and listening to loud music. The beach is where many people welcome the summer. Basically this is how I spent this night, the same way as locals do. I was invited over Sophie´s to have dinner with her and her roommates. As she lives in the heart of Gracia, we could see fireworks from the terrace. For dessert we ate coca de San Joan, a traditional dessert that everybody in Barcelona eats on this night (on the streets almost every barcelonian was carrying the typical paper bag from bakery with coca inside). After the dinner, Sophie's friends came and the proper party begun. Around 1, already in fairly good spirits, we went to the beach. It was really crowded, all the people eating, drinking, some already sleeping… Sophie made me take my first swim in the sea. You have to appreciate my courage, as I wasn’t prepares as she was, and didn’t have my swimming suit (but since you live only once, and while I am still young, I can to some crazy stuff). Fortunately, nobody cared, it was too dark, most of the people were just too drunk to even notice that I was in underwear and not bikini. Moreover, I was not alone, some people even went into water fully dressed, shoes included. This is how I spent my first Sant Joan in Barcelona. You have to believe my words, as I don´t have any pictures to prove it. I spent the verbena alone as Nuno went to Portugal and spent it banging his friends with plastic hammers.

Zawsze znajdą się drobni handlarze przemierzający plażę i nawołujący do zakupu napojów, taniej biżuterii, w zasadzie czegokolwiek, albo masażystki oferujące swoje usługi.

Barcelona, without mention countless tourist attractions/monuments/ good food, has yet another big advantage, direct access to the beach. Of course, it is common knowledge that better, cleaner, less frequented beaches are not in the city center, but nobody can deny that an evening walk down Passaig Maritim is a nice way to end a day. It is very easy to get to the beaches of Barceloneta, Bogatell and Vila Olimpica both by metro or by bicing. That is why barcelonians and tourists from the early spring till autumn try to enjoy there every glimpse of the sun. It is not surprising to see some bold tourists, usually from Nordic countries, who wear flip flops and sleeveless shirts and decide to take a swim in cold sea, when Spaniards still wear jackets and boots. Oh, and one should also be prepared (but this happens mainly in summer) to see countless topless women sunbathing on the urban beach, which is totally acceptable and doesn’t shock anyone.

The urban beaches in Barcelona offer also some attractions for more active ones. You can play volleyball, and Passaig Maritim is ideal for riding a bike, roller-skating or skateboarding.
What is also a common element that you can spot on Barcelona´s beaches, are small traders offering you to buy drinks, cheap jewelry, basically everything, or masseuse offering their services. There are lot of chiringuito (beach bars) when you can drink and eat something when you suddenly get hungry. Or you can just bring your own food as a picnic on the beach is a good alternative too.

Since Nuno was off to Portugal, and I decided to spend a relaxing Sunday reading a book on Barceloneta beach. Of course I'd rather go to a charming little town in the Costa Brava, or even drive up to Casteldefells or Garraf, but the fastest and easiest way to go to a beach, was going by metro to Barceloneta. The beach is clean, it is easy to get there, it wasn’textremely hot so it was not so crowded, there were few people enjoying a swim in the sea. In other words, the perfect place to relax with a book / newspaper.

You can check the names and location of the Barcelona beaches on the map.

Krótkometraże pod chmurką/ Outdoor screenings of short movies

... or to be more specific in a Spain in miniature, the Poble Espanhol (I don´t think there is better place to screen “mini movies” is a better place to show a "mini movie" than a mini version of Spanish Village). Here is the link to my post entirely about Poble Espanyol, as we went there with our friends few months ago. For my personal taste the place is too tourist-oriented and bit tacky, but probably is worth visiting it once. Nice idea of spending summer Friday or Saturday evening is a summer version of Mecal festival, Mecal Air. Every Friday and Saturday (starting 3th of June till 17th of September), from 8pm till midnight, for only 2,5€ (with a flyer, that you simply download from the webstite and print it out) or for 5€ (withoy a flyer) you can not only watch 3 series of short movies (there are 2-3 movies in each section), but also visit the Poble Espanyol. The price is really attractive, as normally you would pay 9.5€ (6,6 with student discount) to enter the Spanish Village. And since the screening doesn´t start before 9.30pm, it gives you whole 1,5hr to have a tour around the Poble Espanyol.

On Saturday, I went with Sophie, my French colleague (and with the flyers of course to pay less) to watch some short movies outdoors. As it happens with movies shorts, some were better than others, but it´s definitely not the last time I went to Mecal Air, as I have to go with Nuno. Besides the movies, there is a small bar serving beer (between 8 and 9 pm it only costs 1€) and barbecue, but I recommend to bring your own food, as some experiences ones did, as the portions served by the festival crew are rather scarce. A warm evening, cold beer, movies, good company, and if you want a 20-minute relaxation massage, I think it is not only me who think it is a perfect way of spending a summer evening. Program and other information about the International Short Film Festival on the Mecal´s official website.

Miasto bogów w Caixaforum/ City of gods in Caixaforum

CaixaForum to centrum kulturalne i społeczne, będące projektem banku la Caixa.

CaixaForum is a cultural and social center, a part of social project of the bank la Caixa. In Barcelona, it is located in a former factory, the building itself is an interesting example of modernist architecture, designed by a famous Catalan architect Puig and Cadafalch. Admission to the permanent and temporary exhibitions is free of charge (sometimes you may pay for different events organized, such as concerts and other cultural events.). The building is stunning, but it is thanks to exhibitions that CaixaForum became one of the most interesting points on the map of cultural events in Barcelona. Bank Caixa Catalunya started its project of promoting the culture in the 80's, when they bought Gaudí´s La Pedrera, now you pay less than enter to casa Batlló that is privately owned by a corporation. The other successful project of the Fundació Caixa Catalunya is CosmoCaixa, which we already visited and recommended to those who want to learn about the world we live in by fun.

This weekend we went to see a temporary exhibition Teotihuacan. City of Gods. Some time ago I saw posters of the exhibition and I knew it is a good reason to go to CaixaForum again.
During the first year of my Iberian studies, we had a subject called History of Pre-Columbian America and it was fascinating to learn about Mayas, Aztecas, Incas, their religion, life and mysterious decline of those empires. I still remember how difficult it was at the beginning to remember strange names of their deities or heroes, after some time Huitzilopochtli or Quetzalcoatl started to sound more familiar. The exhibition refreshed my memories and reminded about my dream of going to Mexico one day and see the Pyramid of the Sun with my own eyes.

Most of the exhibits were showed in Europe for the first time (in Spain you could see the exihibition in Madrid and Barcelona). I recall studying them with fascination on the slides during the history classes. I won´t bore you with details about the exhibition, if you are interested , you can check the brochure.

We also saw a photography exhibition on Haiti (34 secunds later) and some installations and movies on the artistic movies. CaixaForum is open daily; you can consult the temporary exhibitions schedule here.

Portugalia zaprasza/ Portugal invites

Z okazji dnia Portugalii (10 czerwiec) w Barcelonie po raz piąty zorganizowano tydzień kultury portugalskiej. Sztuka, jedzenie, muzyka, kultura (wystawa, spotkanie z portugalskim filozofem i pokaz filmów), to wszystko podczas 6 dniowego festiwalu przybliżał barcelończykom Konsulat Portugalski.

Na deser jakże by inaczej pastéis de Belém.

On the occasion of Portugal's National Day (June 10) , for the fifth time in Barcelona a cultural week was organized to commemorate "Dia de Portugal”. Art, food, music and culture (exhibition, movies, meeting with a famous Portuguese philosopher), all those things that Portugal is famous for were presented to the Barcelonians during the 6-day event by the Portuguese Consulate.

We decided to go to the final event, the concerts of Deolinda and X-wife. The square Jardinets de Salvador Espriu in the heart of Barcelona, at the end of the Passeig de Gracia, was dominated by Portuguese immigrants for few hours who could finally order in Portuguese some Portuguese delicious specialties and drink Portuguese beer, who they believe taste better than other beers. For the dessert, of course something Portuguese and if you like to try a Portuguese liquor Beirao, one of my favorites. At the end of a typical Portuguese Portuguese delicacy, and liquor. A real enclave of Portugal in the heart of Gracia. While we were waiting for our friends, we tried all of tasty snacks served by A Casa Portuguesa (I already wrote about the place here). Caldo verde, rissois de Leitão, grilled chorizo .... For dessert, we couldn’t eat nothing else but Pasteis de Belém. Nuno started to feel bit nostalgic, but since he is going to Portugal in a week, he will have more than a week to swept the nostalgia, but fortunately for the week going for a few days to recharge his batteries for the next few months being abroad.

We ate sitting on the grass, listening to a popular Portuguese music from the 60's and 80's, we watched acrobatic performance of a theater group. This way we passed the time till the very nice concert of the group called Deolinda. You can check their videos, that I really recommend. I will not upload any videos of the second “star” of the evening, case we weren’t impressed by their music or by their performance on the stage, they didn’t manage to establish any contact with the audience. The audience was having much more fun during the first concert, singing along with the singer. During the concert of X-wife instead of singing with the band, a group of people followed an initiative of a Brazilian guy and started to dance to his choreography and resulted more interesting than what was was happening on stage.

This festival is yet another example of the diversity and internationalism of Barcelona, where so many different cultures coexist together.
