Falcons, Laia i protest/ Falcons, Laia and manifestation

W zeszłym tygodniu Carmen przyniosła do pracy rozkład obchodów Świętej Eulali, pieszczotliwie nazywanej Laią.

Last week there were celebrations of Santa Eulalia, affectionately called Laia, and Carmen brought to work a schedule of all the activities. Even if it wasn’t for here, I still would have know about the fiesta, as I had checked it before on the city hall website. I am a freak, I know, but occasionally (well, bit more often) check various regional fiestas happening in the region. As it is impossible to participate in every single activity, and since this year it was incredibly cold, I had to limit myself. Since I already have seen so many castellers towers and giants parades, as they are obligatory elements of every single Catalan celebration, I skipped them this time. Instead we went to see falcons’ performance and light show on the City Hall façade.

Also we visted Ayuntamiento (city hall) which was opened to public (it happens only few days a year).

La Laia is most of all a fiesta for children.

Falcons are another type of human towers, I really not an expert to explain the difference between falcons and castellers, and there are almost no information on falcons on the Internet. I was only able to find a short entry on Wikipedia saying that they are human towers and pyramids that :”follow different rules from the ones of the Castells”. Well, that gives almost no information. In Catalan version there is one additiona detail: their structures are more acrobatic, may be inspired in Czech acrobatic group, Sokol.

I knew I would like it, as much as I admire castellers and their human tower, I think I liked even more the incredible human compositions of falcons. Or maybe it was because it was the first time I saw them. It was impressive. I like to observe focused faces of various “elements”, the flexibility of the smallest ones. I sometimes close my eyes when a structure loses its balance.

Before the falcons performance, a demonstration against banks took place. Of course the place and time were chosen deliberately, as the demonstrators counted on organizers giving them microphones so that they would allow people to watch the falcons. And they were right, they were given their 5 minutes. As we all know, Spain is in a deep crisis, this protest was only one of many that took place recently. We are daily reminded of how bad things are economically, about high unemployment rate, about cuts. And things are expected to be even worse...
