Mniej znaczy więcej/ Less is more

I have already written about some of the buildings that were supposed to be destroyed after the 1929 Barcelona Universal Exposition, as Poble Espanyol, Magic Fountain, and Palau Nacional: that hosts the Museo Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. Turists love to watch the colourful water spectactle, see a Spain in miniature or even enter the museum. Far fewer tourists heard of and decided to visit The Barcelona Pavilion. As Nuno likes modern architecture, for a long time the pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was on top of our list of "places we still need to visit in Barcelona." Finally we had some spare time to go to Pl. Espanya this Sunday (as I already explained we had the whole day to fill with some activities as our original plan got postponed). I want to show you that Barcelona is much more than the modernist architecture of Gaudi (however is the city is dominated by his creations) and there are architectural gems to be discovered.

The Barcelona Pavilion was designed as the entrance to the German section of the Exhibition, torn down after the Expo, only several decades later was reconstructed. The known architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designed modern for its times building, where space seems to flow as there are no closed walls, no unnecessary decoration (originally during the Expo there were no exhibits in the building), in other words the space is empty, bare, if we don’t count few famous Barcelona Chairs and a sculpture. What counts is teh structure. And materials the building is made of. The simplicity of design, with expensive and nobles materials, fully reflects Mies’s mottos "less is more" and "God is hidden in the details. One can just appreciate the subtle beauty of this piece of art.

Niezaplanowany niedzielny spacer/ Unplanned Sunday walk

Plany na niedzielę mieliśmy zupełnie inne. Zostały z powodu mojego roztrzepania przełożone na przyszły weekend. Pogoda znowu niepewna, więc plaża w sobotę musiała nam wystarczyć. Nie mieliśmy ochoty na siedzenie w domu. Wymyśliliśmy więc długi spacer. Aż od Muntaner, przez Diagonal, po Plaça España.Pieszo.

Our plans for Sunday were quite different. We had to reschedule cause of my absent-mindedness. As weather in the morning was not really promising, so going to a new beach in Masnou had to be enough for the weekend. We didn’t feel like staying at home. So we decided to go for a long walk. We started in Muntaner, walked down on Diagonal, till Plaça España. Walking. We stopped by Camp Nou (this time we didn’t enter) and Finca Güell. We were to see street decorations in Sants as they were celebrating their fiesta major, but it turned out that they had already demolished the decorations. So this plan didn’t work neither. Well, I don’t want to drag about our bad luck, I must admit we had breakfast exactly where we had planned to go (in my defense I can only say that during the summer I just love frozen coffee-type beverages, that is why we chose this American coffee chain and not small local coffee shop). We were also lucky to arrive to Finca Güell just in time to enter inside with a guided sightseeing tour (it is only possible on Saturday and Sunday). And although at the end we had to pay for the visit (a poster skipped this small detail), we still thought we were in the right place at the right time. Thanks to that we had the chance to visit yet another Gaudi’s (less known) masterpiece.

Finca Güell is Gaudí's first project (between 1884-1887) commissioned by the Catalan industrialist Eusebi Güell (the master created for him later on a superb Park and Palace Güell). On the property Gaudi was responsible for the porters house, stables and entrance, the latter is without a doubt the most interesting element. To see the metal gate in shape of a dragon who seems to guard the entrance, is really worth making a small detour.

Graffiti na drzwiach rzeźnika/ Graffiti on butcher shop

Graffiti on shut steel blinded doors, I already lost count which part it is. For few weeks I have skipped this subject, but as my collection has grown a bit over the past few weeks, partly thanks to holiday period where more doors are closed during the whole day for few weeks, so the “hunting” of new paintings on closed doors of shops, bars, etc. is more fruitful. Today, the focus is on grocery stores. Below you can find some examples of legal graffiti thanks to which you can recognize the butcher or other food related shop even when closed. The most surprising is a happy cow on a motorcycle on butcher's closed doors.

Uliczne przebieranki na Festa Major de Gracia/ Street dress-up for Festa Major de Gracia

A my razem z nimi.

Barcelona is a city where something is always happening - festivals, concerts, exhibitions. Of course there are also fistas that last the whole night. One of the examples of typical fiestas are fiestas del barrio (barrio means district). Not only every city, bigger or smaller, celebrates a feast of the patron saint of the city (in Barcelona, we have La Merce in September, San Isidoro in May in Madrid, and in October in Pilar Zaragoza), but also every district can have their own fiestas del barrio. In Barcelona the biggest, most famous, most colourful and the loudest are Festas Major de Gracia (celebrated every year in the second half of August, you might want to plan to come to BCN around those dates).

Gracia is one of the most popular districts, maybe not so much for tourists, but definitely for locals, especially among young people and students, as on every street there is at least one bar. It is a district that sleeps during the day, and wakes up at night. Guiris rarely come it here, because there are aren´t any famous monuments, on the other hand it has plenty of oriental food restaurants, cinema verdi where you can watch a movie in the original version and hundreds of bars. Gracia has its unique atmosphere, till the end of the nineteenth century was only a separate small town, then absorbed by the city of Barcelona. Fiesta Mayor has a long tradition: it was first organized in 1817, but only around 1920 took the form that we know today and can enjoy during the whole week.

During Fiesta Mayor de Gracia there are hundreds of different ways of participating in this festival: concerts, street performances, admiring the decorations. It is a carnival in the middle of the summer. All you have to do is to admire the innovation and imagination of people of Gracia, dance in the rhythm of music (you can choose between classical, latin, rock), drink mojitos (or whatever you like) and simply have fun and participate in just participate in having fun late into the night. Streets decorated by nejghbors and families in Gracia make your head spin. Every year the theme is different and since the best decoration wins a prize, the residents are working hard to transform their street and surprise the crowd with the result.

This year, thanks to their great imagination and hours of hard work, we could enter magical world of Peter Pan or the Jungle Book, few steps further and we submerge in a mysterious blue underwater world of Mermaids. Turn to another street, and you find yourself in the space, coop or dumpster. The surprises are waiting on every corner. All decorations are made of plastic bottles, wooden boards, polystyrene, and paper-everything that fertile imagination could think of changing into something totally unpredictable.

I was always fascinated by how different are relations between neighbors in Spain and in my country, how here due to neighborhood initiative, people who have in common the street they live on, can prepare something so creative. In Poland, the only contact you have with your neighbor is a exchanging good mornings in the elevator or talking about weather. In many cases you even wouldn´t recognize your neighbor´s face. Here, on the contrary, a random meeting in the elevator always ends with long conversation. And decorating together their street so you can´t recognize it is just a good way to have some fun with your neighbor. And we did have a lot of fun with them
