La Mercè

W kalendarzu, po fiestach de Gracia, kolejną ważną datą jest 24 wrzesień, kiedy to przypada fiesta de la Marcè, czyli patronki Barcelonyi całe miasto huczne obchodzi święto ku czci Matki Bożej Miłosierdzia. To idealny moment na przyjazd do Barcelony, szczególnie jeśli kogoś interesuje poznanie kultury katalońskiej, bowiem w ciągu kilku dni można zobaczyć castellers, parady gigantów, correfoc, sardanas…

After fiestas de Gracia, Barcelona prepares itself for the next big event, this time celebrated in the whole city: the 24th of September is the day of La Merce, Patron Saint of Barcelona, in other words few days long festival held in honor of Our Lady of Mercy.

It's the perfect time to come to Barcelona, especially if you are interested in Catalan culture, because in just few days you can see castellers, parades of giants, correfoc, sardanas ... In addition to these traditional elements of every festival celebrated in the region, you can choose from a wide program of concerts and hundreds of activities or street performances. There is something for everybody.

Of course I could not miss this festival, but as you can be only in one place at a time, I had to select only some activities. On Friday I went to park Ciudatella to see a Swan Lake ballet performed by dancers from St. Petersburg, on Saturday my choice was a Giants parade and concert in the old beer factory, and on Sunday to end the festival I enjoyed pyrotechnic show on pl. Espanya. (more details in next posts).

Legend has it that during La Mercè celebrations it rains at least once. It is because until the nineteenth century (I am not sure about the exact date, as I found different ones depending on the site) Santa Eulalia was the patron saint of Barcelona and once the title was given to Marce she got upset and every year cries.

This year, the tradition happened to be the reality, as it rained a bit on Saturday morning and in the evening it was really pouring.
Unfortunately Nuno has to spend this Merce at home, with his leg in plaster cast.
