Zaskakujący mieszkańcy Katedry/ Surprising habitants of the cathedral in Barcelona

Katedra w Barcelonie, znana bardziej jako La Seu, poświęcona jest świętej Eulalii i wpasowuje się w atmosferę Dzielnicy Gotyckiej z jej krętymi zaułkami, ciasnymi uliczkami, starymi budynkami. Gotycka, mroczna, imponująca katedra nie mogłaby mieścić się nigdzie indziej, jak w najstarszej części Barcelony. Z zewnątrz, z perspektywy małego placyku, na którym często odbywa się jakiś targ (co optycznie jeszcze go pomniejsza), katedra nie robi piorunującego wrażenia, ale gdy wchodzimy do ciemnego i mrocznego wnętrza, czujemy jej potęgę.




Jednak to krużganki i wirydarz są dla mnie najciekawszą częścią Katedry. Bowiem gdy z ciemności wychodzimy na wewnętrzne podwórko odkrywamy, że w katedrze mieszkają dość zaskakujący osobnicy- gęsi. Spokojnie sobie pływają, skubią jedzonko, za nic mając turystów. Gęsi jest trzynaście, co symbolizuje wiek patronki katedry, bowiem święta Eulalia miała trzynaście lat, gdy zginęła śmiercią męczeńską, za wiarę chrześcijańską. Białe gęsi od ponad pięciuset lat zamieszkują tropikalny ogród z palmami i drzewkami pomarańczowymi, mieszczący się wśród XIV wiecznych krużganków. I podobno gdyby ich zabrakło, zawaliłaby się katedra a Barcelona przestałaby istnieć.



The cathedral in Barcelona, better known as La Seu, is dedicated to the Saint Eulalia and fits the mysterious atmosphere of the Gothic Quarter with its winding alleys, narrow streets, old buildings. This gothic, dark and amazing cathedral could not be located anywhere else but in the oldest part of Barcelona. From the outside, from the perspective of a small square, which often is a converted into market (which optically diminishes it even more), the cathedral isn’t very impressive, but when you enter the dark and into the dark and gloomy interior, you feel overwhelmed by its magnificence.



Personally I find the cloister and the patio the most interesting part of the Cathedral. When from the dark and cold interior you get out to the inner courtyard, you find yourself not only in the sunny cloister, but you also get surprised by unusual habitants of la Seu, thirteen white geese. They swim calmly in a small pond, behave naturally, not noticing the tourists. There are thirteen geese, the number corresponds to the age of Saint Eulalia, the patron of the cathedral, when she was martyred, tortured and finally cruelly killed. White geese have been living in a small tropical garden with palm and orange trees, that is located among the XIV century cloister. And according to a legend, the cathedral would collapse and Barcelona would disappear, if the geese are not present in the cathedral.
