Poznać Barcelonę na rowerze/ Explore Barcelona by bike

Taki mały detal, a ile nam sprawił radości.

We have been in Barcelona for over year and a half. But it doesn’t mean that we know all its secrets or that we have already discovered all the hidden gems. It was confirmed last Sunday, when we had the opportunity to discover a few secrets while participating in an alternative sightseeing trip on a bike. For 4 hours, accompanied by a guide Maria and two American couples, we visited a non touristic Barcelona. It's really surprising how different the city looks from atop a bicycle.

For a typical tourist there is only one way to explore a city, that is walking. It is so simple and so obvious. I have to admit that we visited all the cities we travelled to this way. Still, we tried to discover some alternatives routes to do so, get lost in the tangle of streets, as there is no better way to get to know the real atmosphere of a new and unfamiliar city. But combine an alternative route with discovering a city on a bike in a great company? Yes, we are in! Barcelona is a perfect city to be visited by bike, as it is fairly flat and enjoys nice Mediterranean climate. We already have and know all the advantages od BiCiNg, but it serves rather to move from point A to point B and what we wanted was a touristic tour to see and explore Barcelona. We came across a really nice bike tour, offered by Steel Donkey.

During few hours all we had to do was pedal and enjoy the views while listening to funny stories told by our great guide. What we saw was definitely not on the list of 10-things-that-you-absolutely-must-see, but instead we could breathe in the real ambiance of the city. And it is what we normally prefer while sightseeing, as what you remember better afterwards is not the museum or some fancy architectonical monument, but the atmosphere.

What made us interested in the offer of Steel Donkey was that their guided bike tours kind of avoids the most know (read: touristic) routes and instead takes us on some alternative ones.

Anyone can visit Sagrada Familia, the cathedral or other famous landmarks on their own, checking all the necessary information in their guide. But who would be better to show us around the Raval district, real melting pot of different cultures, that someone who actually used to live there? Our guide María, who already visited half of the world, told us so many entertaining stories about Raval. Like the one about a female vampire who used to kidnap small children and sell their blood and body parts to rich and sick Barcelonians. We walked down the streer where she lived like thousands times and we never heard that story.

Spanish people in general are open and communicative, but I was really impressed how María managed to integrate six complete strangers that met for the first and last time and were to spend 4 hours together sightseeing. After adjusting bike’s seat height and checking the brakes, we were asked what we had already visited in Barcelona. And depending on our answers, our tour guide would adjust the bike tour so that all the participants could see something new. It seems that every tour is different , as there are always different people who have different interests and different expectations. We were taken to Raval district, riding through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter, afterwards we stopped by Ronda de Sant Antoni (a flea market takes place there on Sunday) and to finish a great tour, we ended having a picnic in Park Ciutadella.

We have discovered so many things you can’t find in any guide, that I will soon write a separate post on a Raval that María showed us.
Visiting Barcelona with one of Steel Donkey’s guides is a great option for those who want to discover the true (sometimes uglier) face of Barcelona rather just the superficial layer that the city shows to tourists. You still get some facts and stories about the monuments you pass by (in our case it was the city hall, Santa Maria del Mar church and Santa Cruz Hospital, among others), but what you will remember are the anecdotes from the life of Barcelonians and other city’s curiosities. You will also get a list of recommended tapas bars that are known only to locals. We know that we will soon go back to a place with the best Argentinean empanadas in town. This is another advantage of this bike tour. As their guides (in our case, María) are not only interested in making our bicycle tour memorable, but they want us to have a great time in Barcelona during our entire stay. So during the tour we were recommended countless places where to eat, where to go, events we could find interesting. And then the tour itself was just so much fun. One of our stops was the Center of Contemporary Art, where María revealed us a little secret. When you look up, you can discover a great panorama of Barcelona on the mirrored wall of the building. Such a small detail, and it gave us so much fan. And once again, it is not type of information you can find in a guidebook.

So do you really need more arguments to book a bike tour the next time you visit Barcelona? It is not only us who had a great time, Steel Donkey has only positive feedback on trip advisor, which doesn’t surprise us at all. Totally recommended, as you can see those type of tours are great not only for those who visit Barcelona for the first time!
