Fira Sant Galderic

Fira to katalońska wersja słowa feria, czyli festiwal, festyn. Galderik to patron rolników, stąd te produkty lokalne.

Fira means in Catalan what feria in Castellano, that is fair, festival, market. In Spain every town, even the smallest one, has its own feria, it might be a day of its patron, or any other occasion that is good to celebrate. In Rubi, where we live, on 16th of October Fira Sant Galderic takes place. Of course there were plenty of posters announcing this event this event, but we somehow missed them and only find out about the fair accidently, on our way to do some sighseeing in BCN with our first guest (more about that in the net post). On the main street, closed for cars, there was a big market, with local vendors offering traditional Catalan treats, cheese, meat, pastries, honey, even mojitos (not that it is typical of Cataluña). Galderic is the saint patron of farmers, that is why there were local food products from the region. It seemed as the whole Rubi’s population was on the street, tasting the food, buying and talking.

Nuno and Rodriguez (as you can see on the photo), were especially interested in one stand, selling sweets, candies, jelly beans, which they afterwards sucked and chewed on the way to Barcelona.

And on Sunday, thanks to the Feria we had a cheesecake (Pastis de formatge) for breakfast, athough not that tasty as my mum’s. It was not easy to buy it, as the confectioner pretended not to understand my phrase that was half in Castilian and half in Catalan.
