Baskijske pintxos/ Basque pintxos

I still haven’t tried pintxos in Basque Country. Even though Pais Vasco is just next to Catalunya we still haven’t visited Bilbao, San Sebasian or Guernica. Hopefully we can go there for some long weekend, cause I really liked it few years ago and would definitely like to go back there. Even if it would be a totally different trip. Last time, I was still an Erasmus exchange student, and we went on a girls only road trip (two Kasias, Jayme, the American and Agnes from Germany), and despite the horrible weather (it was raining all 4 days) we had a lot of fun. When I think about my last Erasmus trip I remember those funny moments: flooded tent, unreliable gps, singing Backstreet Boys hits while driving, dancing in the rain in the center of Bilbao (or was is in San Sebastian). Those crazy times.

Every time I eat pintxos I remember this trip, don’t know why, cause we didn’t eat a pinxto there, not even once.

The list of pinxtos is endless, it depends on the creativity of the owner serving those little sandwiches. But somehow even the strangest combinations of ingredients is always a hit. The first pintxo bar we went to in Barcelona was a chain Txapela, that is on the most touristic street Passeig de Gracia (actually there are 2 different spots on the same street). We’ve been there many times, when we are not that hungry, now less as we discovered two other places that are better than this chain. The first one I discovered when I googled simply “the best pintxos in Barcelona” and many people recommended Taberna Maitea as the one serving the best ones. The second one is located in the heart of Gracia, and the localization is the reason we go there so often.

Maitea Taberna is probably our number one, it quite far from the strict touristic center (here is the link with the address and list of pintxos), has nice atmosphere. It is self service, you can eat as many pintxos as you want, later on they just count your toothpicks and give you a bill. And we are always surprised it is way cheaper than Txapala.

The bar on Carrer Verdi has a really nice location, and unfortunately not so nice service, so we basically go there cause we are in the neighborhood.
But we never say no to a good pintxo as it is hard to resist.
